Red Boot Barn

Well, I had a great little trip into the U S of A on the weekend. Me and my BFF went over Friday and did some Target shopping and Olive Gardening that night. Then Saturday we hit numerous stores, Joann’s included, and did some epic thrifting.

I learned a few things about the thrift stores in the states – the prices are insanely cheap, things aren’t marked super high prices just because it’s got a brand name and the AS IS section at the Salvation Army is a bizarre and magical building. I’ll have to post my finds and adventures in more detail. Right now I wanted to share Red Boot Barn, where some of the Wednesday night with my best friend finds are ending up.

Lovely little gems like these,

Look at the blue of this bag! It’s amazing. I found one very similar on Saturday, a slightly different blue, for $2.95. I repeat $2.95! Insanity.

This bundt pan is great too. Again, an awesome colour. It would be a great kitchen decoration, or one of those handing lights that people seem to be turning pans into lately.

This luggage is great too. We saw a bunch of similar items while thrifting in the US, sadly it’s so tricky to find interiors worthy of actually picking up luggage either for resale or to use.

Now I’m inspired to share my finds from the weekend. I hope tomorrow is a sunny photo worthy day.

My latest crush(ES)

Honestly, I’m in love. ModCloth rocks. Here are some of the new things I’m drooling over. The worst part, they get new stuff daily. It’s horrible.

Recent Thrift Scores

I picked up these awesome canisters on my last Wednesday night out with my BFF.

I also got this little bit of awesomeness, a metal colander. I’ve wanted one for a while and I have a larger cream coloured one from a vintage shop so I’m happy to have a little friend for it. They’re great for displaying my magnet sets.

This Wednesday we’re out again, fingers crossed I get something fun again.

Back to school prep

I have a bit of a Mabel’s Label’s addiction.

Just a little one. I have oodles for the kids and I have some ‘Mrs K’ ones for school. They’re super awesome, they stick to anything and our 13 letter last name fits, even with first names!

Nate starts JK this year, the all day everyday program. Aside from it being absolutely mind blowing that my kids will both be in school all day, I’m a bit worries about how Nate will do since his birthday is December 23rd, but I suppose he’ll cope. It’s going to be an interesting first week of school around here. I’m usually pretty pooped that first week and then the kids will be going full days for the first time. I think there are going to be lots of quiet evenings around here that week.

Anyhow back to the reason for this post, so I was tagging the boys shoes and I did a whole ‘right is red’ thing for Nate since I have blue and red shoe labels for him. They sell some Preschool Shoe labels now, but since I have a stash I was just working with what I have in a fun way. I also bought and tagged some cointaners for them to use. It’s going to be a HUGE adjustment to make 2 lunches and 4 snacks . . . *sigh*

I also married all my Mabel’s Labels into one of the fun little zip locks they come in and then I’ve kept the rest for all that trip money and other fun stuff that will need to be sent in this year. I also keep all those bill return envelopes for that purpose too.

Got Instagrams?

I might be late to this party, but there’s gotta be someone else who didn’t know about these things so I’ll share just in case. Over at Ink361.com they have a round up of great sites that let you do things with your Instagram photos, allow me to share.

Blurb allows you to turn your Instgrams into books.

Stikcygrams, oh I can’t say enough nice things about them. I’ve ordered many, many times. Looove them. The best part? Free shipping anywhere! More love!

Yeah, that’s an Instagram of my Stickygrams made from Instagrams on my fridge. Say that 5 times fast!

Phoolz has photo tips and challenges. They’re currently working through the alphabet.

Casetagram lets you make a cover for your iPhone 4 or 4s covered with your instagram photos. Super cool. Sadly I only have an iPhone 3 and can’t play along.

There are also a few companies that will print your Instagrams on canvas and such. I used this company and just uploaded an Instagram image and it worked just fine too.

Friday’s stop over in Watertown, NY

On my way to Ottawa this past weekend I left super early on Friday morning to make a pit stop across the border in Watertown, NY because there was a Target and a Joann’s. There was a big line up heading into the US and while I was waiting I saw the huge line to get back into Canada and was worried I’d be super stuck travelling back at about 5pm but all was good.

I thought getting through the border would be pretty easy, I’m a girl, you’re a girl, I’m going to Target, but I was asked a lot of questions and had to open my trunk and such . . . but then I was let into the US!

I picked up some fun fabrics in Joann’s.

I’m in love with this mustardy print.

I paired it up with this pretty grey fabric, no project in mind at all, just love the combo.

I also picked up some woodgrain, because you can always use more woodgrain fabrics!

And this vintage rose sort of print. I must be developing a thing for yellow recently.

Now what to make, what to make . .

Brilliant packaging.

While I own a 1 inch button maker, my friend Joanna and I rented a slightly larger one for a weekend a while back and went crazy making larger magnets. I packaged mine into little zip locks, in sets of 2 or 4. Joanna had a great idea to create larger sets of her photography magnets and she packaged them in old CD cases.

They look great and it’s a great use of cases when you store your CDs in another way.

Ste Anne’s spa my night away.

Last time I went to the spa it was heaven, this time it was a bigger slightly farther away heaven. I’ve been spoiled going to Ste Anne’s twice in the past few months but I’m not ashamed to say I’ll be doing again!

We’re planning an anniversary trip there shortly. My hubby’s really into cooking and food so I can’t wait for him to try some of the great meals they always serve up.

I had the whole top floor of this house to myself, it was far too much space. There’s beds for 3 and I felt so decadent just puttering around all by myself, but it was a fantastic time away. I took a relaxation class, used the work out room, enjoyed the hot tub (and not the cool plunge pool), eucalyptus room . . . just remembering it all makes me want to be back there.

How fitting there was one of these in the hallway!

If you are in the area you can get last minute deals for a steal, just check about 5 days in advance. Pardon the snow, yeah it took me that long to share these photos! I’ll be quicker with the summer visit ones. It was absolutely *freezing* when I went and I didn’t get to enjoy the grounds so much like I’ll be able to this month.

Instagram on Canvas

A little while ago, Easy Canvas Prints contacted me and asked if I’d like to review a product. I choose to go with a picture canvas. I uploaded this Instagram picture of Nate, it’s one of my favs. At first I was worried that the resolution or size would be wrong and the site would yell at me but all went well and I love the finished product!

It’s an 8 inch x 8 inch canvas and it’s going to make a really great keepsake of his first year at soccer. It’s a great size and goes great on the wall or just on a table top.

You can choose the colour on the edges of the canvas, or to have it mirrored from the front image. I choose that method and because of the effect (It’s Walden, X-Pro II, or Hefe, I can’t remember) and the black border and it turned out really well. My hubby said it looked ‘grainy’ but I explained that’s because of the Instagram filter and also the textured canvas. I love how it turned out!

It came packaged really well, I was a bit worried since it was traveling all the way up here from the US but all was well. I suppose I’ll need to order another one so Wesley can get some canvas love too!

If we had more land

Sometimes I think it would be cool to have a little shed/workshop/studio/room in the backyard to escape to and create away. If we had more space I might be tempted to get one of these, my own little Hobbit House!

But we don’t have a ton of land . . . and what if I needed to pee . . . . or it was super hot . . . or it’s winter and I want to craft late at night in my jammies . . . . Guess we just need a bigger house!
